The Azusa Street Revival
312
Azusa street; the place were God used humble men and women of God in a old barn
behind two wooden crates as a pulpit crying out to God changed history as God
restored the gifts of His Spirit back to the church. This move of God has
birthed most of the Pentecostal and Charismatic churches in the 20th century and
even into the 21st century. This revival has continued on, spread and influence
the many healing revivals, the latter rain movement and even the charismatic
renewal. Prior to the time of the Azusa Street Revival there was a revival
ensuing in Wales in the first years of the twentieth century especially 1904
under a young man used of God by the name of Evans Roberts who did not want to
be seen. God was also moving on the hearts of Americans starting with a small
bible school in Topeka Kansas with Charles Parham a independent minister who
believed in the gift of healing. He and his class on January 3, 1901, found out
through scripture that their was a definite second work of grace and that the
gifts of tongues was the initial physical evidence of that work. One of the
ladies in Parhams bible school asked him to pray for to receive The Baptism. He
had not received The Baptism yet, but God told him to pray for her which he did.
She received the baptism a light shone upon her and she was enabled to speak and
write in 27 different Chinese dialects. The Us government came out to record
this. A one eyed black man by the name of William Seymour sat outside his
classes to listen in. God called Seymour to LA not received the baptism of the
spirit as of yet. He left for LA, and On April 6,1906, The group gathered in one
accord, touching, and agreeing, concentrating on the book of Acts. NO one in
this small gathering had clergy credentials nor did anyone have an official
pulpit. Each person did have faith and determination to tarry for The Holy
Ghost. Suddenly all resistance departed, and The Holy Ghost came with a force
incomprehensible by the human mind. Several members were slain instantly and baptized
in The Holy Ghost and began speaking in tongues. GOD anointed Jennie Moore with
the gift to play the piano for the first time and to sing in unknown tongues.
The power of God was so strong it drew people from blocks away to come get
touched by GOD. One reporter described it thus "A disgraceful intermingling
of races, they cry, they make howling noises all day and into the night.
They run, jump, shake all over, shout to the top of their voices, spin in
circles, and fall out on the saw dust blanketed floor jerking, kicking, and
rolling all over it. some of them pass out as though they were dead. These
people appear to be mad, mentally deranged, or under a spell. They claim to be
spirit filled. They have a one eyed, illiterate, Negro as their preacher who
stay on his knees much of the time with his head hidden between the wooden milk
crates. He doesn't talk very much, but he can be heard shouting 'repent,' and
he's supposed to be running the thing... The repeatedly sing the same song over
and over, 'The comforter Has Come.'" God wants to do it again will
you allow Him?
